This is an exam to test your proficiency over English. The exam will test candidates listening, reading, writing, and speaking ability. You have 40 minutes for the listening section, 60 minutes for the reading section, 60 minutes for writing section, and 11 to 14 minutes for speaking sessions. The total time of the exam will be two hours 55 minutes. In the reading section, you will be given comprehensions to test how efficiently you can read and understand the English language. In the listening section, you will be made to listen to sentences or paragraphs in English and test how well you understand the meaning and context. In the writing section, you may be asked to write something. The handwriting of the candidates doesn’t matter because it is only a test for your English proficiency. But you may still want to consider having readable handwriting. Even after you wrote everything right, if the evaluator did not understand, you will be losing marks for that. Especially if you are applying for educational purposes. There is a cut off on the IELTS exam result. For other purposes, this exam is basically just to understand your level of familiarity with English. There is no pass or fail. You will be given a grade between 1 to 9 which indicates your level of understanding. The last section will be speaking, there will be an interview asking some basic questions. Then you will be given a topic with one-minute preparation time where you frame your 2-minute speech and deliver.
