This tale is based on the real-life events of the Turpin family. David and Louise Turpin had a total of 13 children who suffered severe abuse and neglect, often being handcuffed and denied food and basic care. The parents were eventually sentenced to life in prison with a 25-year parole eligibility period. However, the trauma inflicted on the children continued even after their rescue from the horrific household. In July 2022, six of the Turpin siblings filed separate lawsuits against Riverside County, California, and the foster care organization ChildNet. These six children were placed with a foster family after being rescued from the Turpins’ residence.
